Banish stress by thinking better of yourself
Did you know that worrying can damage your brain? It’s been shown that people who have a tendency to get stressed and see the bad side or concentrate on the negative have a smaller hippocampus.
Hippo what you say? The hippocampus is the part of the brain where your emotions are managed and metered out. The larger and more developed your hippocampus is the more likely you are to manage better and focus on what’s possible.
So how do you develop this hippocampus thing then? Well you need to start some mental training in believing in your worth and your abilities.
That’s because hippocampus is the area of your brain that turns short-term memories in to long-term memories. So if up until now you’ve been feeding it evidence of how bad things are or how it always goes wrong for you that’s what it will produce for you in terms of memories.
To turn this around so your memories are positive and useful start consciously pointing out to yourself when things are going well. Start with small everyday things that you like and enjoy and say out loud how well you do them and why.
Then work up to bigger more significant events and tasks and train yourself to spot the good things and how well they went.
So instead of saying: ‘Oh no, I know this is going to go all wrong; as usual.’ Try something like: ‘Now what do I need, or who can help me, make this go better . . . . ?’
You only need to apply this technique consciously for a relatively short time for it to become a habit and then the norm. In fact it’s been said that you form a new habit within 21 days.
So what are you waiting for? A whole new stressless world is out there waiting for you!
