Developing your management skills

If you wanted to improve management skills you’d go in search of business training, or read some books on skills in management. Or better still get your company to finance a course for you right?
Well maybe, but the real answer to better management starts with you and how you manage your self.
Manage Your Thoughts to Improve Your Management Skills

Think about it. If I were to ask you now to consider all the things you did today in the name of management, what would come up for you?
Would it be images of what went wrong, or how you didn’t really get on with the tasks you’d set yourself? Or perhaps it conjures pictures of a stressed you regretting time wasted or mistakes made.
If that is the case for you don’t worry or feel so bad. It’s something that we all do. We think about things and as we do we get feelings about those things and then, depending on our inner-beliefs around them, we either have positive or negative emotions as a result.
Creating a Positive Cycle of Improvement
Of course the more often we can get positive feelings the more likely it is that our management of others, resources and ourselves improves. Needless to say this becomes a positive and reinforcing cycle that’s good for you, your colleagues and business.
Secrets of Success
So a core secret of good management is being able to generate positive and helpful thoughts. But just how do you do this?

It’s no good just saying to yourself - ‘Be positive.’ You and I know that just doesn’t work. You need to train yourself to be able to think, feel and act positive on demand. That means whenever you need to switch into positive, ‘can-do’ mode you have the power to do so and astound your colleagues or competitors.

A very useful nlp (neuro linguistic programming) technique for this is known as Anchoring Resourceful States.

A resourceful state is one where you have good, positive feelings. Anchoring means to be able to train yourself to use a trigger, be it squeezing your thumb and finger, or hearing a sound, to bring about all the good, positive feelings that state of mind has.
Here is a simple set of steps to follow to get yourself really feeling good and up for anything.

Go back in your mind and find a personal example of feeling really good and happy with yourself. It can be anything and anywhere. Make sure that it gives you the kind of feelings that you want and that you know would help you in the way described earlier.

  • 1. Choose an anchor, (could be an imaginary circle of excellence, or touching little finger and thumb together on left hand).
  • 2. Now recall the memory of a time when this feeling was at its strongest for you. Check that you are feeling (that is, as if you were there again) into this experience. Seeing thro’ own eyes, not observing. When there pay attention to what colours you see, bright or hazy, quality of what you see and any other distinctions. What do you hear? Is it loud or quiet? What is the location of the sounds? Are there voices, are you speaking to other people? Listen to those sounds and anything else you hear.. Allow yourself to really experience the feeling, let it get really strong and enveloping for you. As you do touch your little finger and thumb on your left hand for as long and only as long as you feel these sensations intensely.. When you have experienced the feeling and the touch of your finger to thumb, release that touch. Shake yourself or move or say your telephone number backwards.
  • 3. This touch has become the anchor for this state. Repeat process several times, until you know there is a strong connection between the touch and the feelings.
  • 4. Test the anchor. Think of something else and as you do so touch your little finger and thumb together in precisely the way you did when you were setting up the anchor. This is called firing the anchor.
What happens? If you have set up the anchor effectively you will recall the scene, the sounds, and the feelings of the memory as if you were there. If not keep practising. Be sure fully associated.
  • 5. Now think of a future situation where you would like to have the feelings you have anchored. This time as you imagine the situation in the future, fire the anchor. What do you see, hear, and feel now? When you do this successfully you are transferring your desired feelings, your resourceful state, to another and in this case future context.
  • Remember:
Fully associate into the experience before you set the anchor
    Make the anchored experience intense
Use a distinct and specific anchor that is easily reproduced
Set the anchor just prior to reaching the most intensive part of the experience.
Use exactly the same anchor to recall the experience.

The above is nlp training that will help you get into a positive frame of mind. As you will agree once you’re in such a state it’s much easier and more fun to manage and be productive.
