Got the Blues or Feeling Anxious? Here’s what to do
Sometimes you just need to accept a limiting or blue mood so that you can change it.
Even if it’s a state of mind where you seem stuck and or whether it’s one where you feel a low level of anxiety a little bit of intuitive enquiry helps get you out of it.
What’s it all about
There are two methods I advise to help you find out what’s going on. One is writing down how you feel and the other is getting out in to the fresh air and letting your thoughts wonder for a while.
Write it down
If you choose the writing option then just free flow with your thoughts and see what comes. Don’t edit as you go, just let it all out. Pause for a moment and then review. See if it makes more sense or gives you clues as to what’s going on in your mind at a deeper level.
You might see that there’s a theme or a desire that is repeated. Perhaps you need more information before you feel less anxious about something work-related that’s bothering you. Or you see that your notes show you feel blocked or stale. This might be because you’ve not been outside in the fresh air, or you haven’t been active. Your mind and body work better with good levels of oxygen and activity. So get outside whenever you can.
Take a walk and breath in the surroundings with all your senses.
A walk down a country path can lead to the light at the end of seemingly dark passage in your life.
Change of Scene
If the writing option doesn’t appeal then a change of environment might just the thing to help your mind focus on what’s bothering or blocking you.
It might be that you’ve been working on too many things and your intuition is telling you it’s time to play. So think of some things you could do that would lighten you up. Pick up the phone and make a surprise call to a friend. Go to talk to a colleague somewhere else in your office and just pass the time of day. Again if you can get outside and maybe persuade someone else to come along.
The additional benefit of using this technique is that you are developing useful self-awareness and your intuition.
Useful Skill to Develop
We often get wrapped up in our feelings to the point where they are constant filters through which we see receive information. For example during a meeting you’re mind is going over the disappointment you feel thanks to an earlier comment. Because of this you’re then assessing everyone else and their comments on this basis. Not always useful.
The enquiry techniques described above will also help you develop the ability to step out of your feelings and see the bigger picture and be more objective. Much more useful.
