Worry Less by Speaking Your Mind
Worrying never did anyone any good – a phrase I think from a song. It’s true of course and we tend to make matters seem worse by fretting.
Nagging self doubts. Yet the other day as I was standing at the kitchen sink washing up and turning over a problem in my mind, nagging myself over what tasks I hadn’t completed. Then I suddenly stopped and asked myself out loud: ‘What kind of problem is this?’
Turnaround Moment. Doing this actually made me start to think constructively. I imagined the various parties involved in the ‘problem’ which now incidentally I started to refer to as a project. Then I thought about what they’d want and what their viewpoint might be. Spurred on by this sudden practical common sense approach, I peeled off the rubber gloves and dashed to my pen and note pad and started writing down objectives and how they could be met. I also outlined how I might meet the other parties’ needs halfway. A smile came to my face at that point. My mind picturing how all of us could find a win-win outcome out of this situation fairly easily.
Inside 15 minutes I had a plan and a schedule and felt a lot better.
Speak your Mind. So the learning from this tale for me is that instead of going further and further inside my head with thoughts of a worrying nature I could bring them outside.
I’ve found adopting this approach to worrying truly liberating and rewarding. Rewarding in the sense that now I can trust myself to solve problems or at least come up with possible solutions. Liberating in the sense that my energy levels soar, mainly because energy isn’t being on berating myself.
